Are you curious about nanotechnology? Do you know that nanotechnology is already being used in our everyday lives? Do you want to know more about nanotech? NanoNoid.com - The nanotechnology search engine, was created to help get you these answers and many more.

Nanotechnology is reshaping the world we live in for both good and bad. If you are a Sci-Fi fan, you’ve obviously seen nanotechnology portrayed in a certain light. There are concerns that nanobots as seen in the Sci-Fi Stargate series might gain the ability to replicate and destroy all life. Obviously that is science fiction, but many things that were once science fiction have now become science fact. While this Sci-Fi version is fictional, there are many positive benefits being seen with nanotechnology. As a matter of fact there are many positive benefits that we are currently enjoying for our research into nanotech and many more to come.

What's do you want to know?

For instance, nanotechnology has been incorporated into a lot of our everyday household products. Nanotechnologies have been gaining steam over the years and they are bing used in more and more products and their benefits are now being realized in medical products, automotive products, electronic items, and they are also being utilized in cosmetics as well. For one, it is believed that in the near future, welding will be an obsolete term in the automotive industry. It is believed by many that glues that are strengthened with nanoparticles might be the only thing hold formerly welded pieces together on your car. How is that for advancement in science? According to an article by Westlaw Journal Automotive, “ In January 2004 GM expanded its use of nanocomposite material, introducing it on the body-side molding for the 2004 Chevrolet Impala. Its use has expanded to other components and other vehicles since then. There is a lot to like from an engineering standpoint about carbon nanotube structures that are 100 times stronger than steel at lower mass.”

Imagine that, carbon nanotube structures that are 100 times stronger than steel at lower mass! Nanoparticles are currently being tested in a synthetic rubber used in car tires and the end result has been tires that last longer and grip the road better than traditional tire under the same conditions. Nanoparticles are being utilized in paint and a host of other products. There was a recent report about the use of nanodust on the windshield of cars to repel particles and lessen the need of wipers. Nanoparticles are being added to certain carwash soaps and wax to help you car shine better and longer and repel dirt. One of the benefits of nanoparticles in cosmetic products such as sunscreens and sunblocks helps to block harmful ultraviolet light. The various uses of nanotechnology in our everyday products are astouinding.

With all of the positive benefits that are being seen through the incorporation of nanotechnology in our everyday lives, potential risks exist. Many question how much harm is being caused by the presence of these nanoparticles in our environment. What types of effects are being felt by not just the humans on the planet, but the animals and the plants and trees and all of the organisms that are essential to making life possible on this planet? It is possible that we may not learn of the extent of the harm being caused by the proliferation of nanotechnology across the planet until it is too late. It is possible that when we actually realize what harm we have brought upon ourselves it may be too late to reverse the damage. In the end it might be like the Sci-Fi Stargate series, where the presence of nanobots threatens to destroy all life on earth.

Nanotechnology is already in the air that we breathe, the water that we drink and probably in the foods that we eat. The size of these particles is so small that you wouldn’t even notice if you ingested it. With that being said, there is new evidence that nanobots can be unleashed on cancer cells. Studies have been conducted on human subject with excellent results and no side-effects, where these nanobots have successfully targeted cancer cells and destroyed them with no harm to the person. With these types of beneficial results, it is difficult to call a halt to all nano research. Rather, we should take better care and more protective measures to protect ourselves and our planets and prevent overzealous scientists from running unchecked.
